National specialty---Automation

The development history of the automation can be traced back to the undergraduate major of traffic automation control established in 1978 by the original Xi'an Highway University. In 1998, automatic control and industrial automationmerged as automation specialty. The automation was rated as a famous brand major in Shaanxi Province in 2006. In 2009, the "Automation Professional Talent Training Model Innovation Experimental Zone" was established here as a provincial-level talent training model innovation experimental zone in Shaanxi. In 2010, it was selected as a national-level "first-class characteristic specialty construction point" and "Excellent Engineer Education and Training Program" pilot majors. In 2012, it was listed as a comprehensive reform pilot by the Ministry of Education. At present, the automation mainly recruits undergraduates according to the four learning directions as traffic information and control direction, industrial automation direction, rail transit and intelligent instruments direction and an outstanding engineer education and training plan direction. The undergraduate programme is 4 years, the bachelor’sdegree certification will be awarded after graduation.

There are currently 60 teachers in automation specialty which include 9 full professors, 20 associate professors,one professor-level senior engineerand 2 senior engineers. There are approximately 300 undergraduates, 80 master students and 6 doctoral students are trained every year. About 8% of graduates go abroad each year for short-term exchanges program with Hong Kong, Taiwan, South Korea, American, Canada and Europe. The employment rate of automation graduates is as high as 95%. Employment directions include IT industry, transportation industry and automobile manufacturing industry.

CharacteristicSpecialty of Shaanxi Province---Electrical Engineering and Automation

Electrical engineering and automation specialty was founded in 1987 and began to recruit undergraduates in 1994. In 2000, two professional directions were established in electrical engineering and automation specialty as the direction of building electrical engineering which mainly focus on the strong current field of building electrical and the direction of intelligent buildingmainly focusing on the field of weak current and building automation in building electrical. In 2005, it declared the major of intelligent technology for building facilities based on the direction of intelligent building. In 2008, the major of electrical engineering and automation was rated as a specialty of Shaanxi Province. After nearly 30 years development, this major has developed as provincial-level specialty that covers electrical engineering, architectural electrical engineering, building automation technology and industrial automation technology  directions.More than 1,500 technical engineers have been trained for the society Moreover, most of the graduates have a good reputation in the field of urban and rural construction, power systems, and equipment manufacturing enterprises. Electrical engineering and automation majors enroll 180 students every year. There are 19 teachers, including 1 professor, 8 associate professors, and 10 lecturers, including 6 master instructors and 15 teachers with doctoral degrees.

The scientific research fields of electrical engineering and automation specialty include power electronics and power transmission, power systems and automation, control theory and control engineering, detection technology and automation devices, pattern recognition, building electrical and intelligence. It covers research directions as new energy utilization technology, building automation technology, complex system signal and processing technology direction, power electronic application technology and intelligent instrumentation direction. In recent years, electrical engineering and automation specialty had undertaken 3 projects from the National Natural Science Foundation of China and one project from the National Science and Technology Support Program and published more than 50 high-level journal papers on EI and SCI index.
